I really liked the Upright Piano in the Grand 3 Trial and do like the fact (for the money) that I could get both a Grand Piano and Upright with TG3. Each piano delivers an immediate playing experience with an emotional range extending from the heartiest fortissimo to the most delicate and nuanced pianissimo thanks to 24 sampled velocity layers. Thank you I recently tried the trial of The Grand 3 and I did love it but very curious as to what the Ivory 2 sounds/plays like.

Onto the Yamaha! I loaded up the C7 and opted to try out a patch with the ‘synth layer’ enabled. Ivory II Studio Grands from Synthogy is a virtual instrument featuring samples from two grand pianos: a Bösendorfer 225 Grand and a Steinway B Concert Grand.
I expected this instrument to decimate my RAM and CPU, but the engine of Ivory 2 is wonderfully efficient. I don’t know how they optimized this engine so well to get it so that even at what I consider to be a mid to higher audio buffer range, I didn’t perceive any latency at all. The extraordinary Italian 10 Foot Concert Grand Piano with Synthogys highly acclaimed and groundbreaking Ivory II piano engine. I was also surprised to find that at a buffer setting of 256, I wasn’t unhappy and annoyed. Ivory II American Concert D is one of those instruments. Everything about Ivory 2 felt and sounded just so right. Those last 2 points are sore spots with me - piano instruments that get it wrong really overdo the resonance and pedal sounds. I was impressed with the sheer number of dynamic layers, the pedal sounds weren’t overwhelming, and the resonance didn’t feel ‘gimmicky’. Holy hell! The piano sound literally felt like it was jumping out of my monitors and at my face.
